abstract = "One of the goals of the Project Role of biodiversity in climate
change mitigation in Latin America (ROBIN) is to quantify the role
of biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems in climate change
mitigation in South and Mesoamerica. In ROBINs context, landscape
cohesion, i.e. the proportion of intact remnant habitats, is an
indicator for biodiversity, whereas changes in natural habitats
causes decrease in extension, integrity and biodiversity.
Land-use/ Land-cover (LULC) changes would therefore have direct
effects on biodiversity and also have implications on climate
changes. According to the Brazilian conservation unit classes, at
a National Forest (FLONA), forest resources are used for multiple
and sustainable uses and for scientific research, with emphasis on
methods for the sustainable exploration of native forests. Despite
the historical anthropic pressure at its surroundings, Tapajos
National Forest (TNF) is still preserved; guaranteeing natural
landscape, and consequently its biodiversity is maintained.
Outside its boundaries there are forest fragments at different
succession stages resulting in changes in structure and floristic
diversity. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to discriminate
LULC classes using multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis
(MESMA) applied to TM/ Landsat data at TNF area. The results
showed that MESMA-based fraction images can help on discrimination
of landscape patterns in a tropical forest domain. This research
presented an initial methodology to be applied to moderate spatial
resolution images. Future researches should point to
discrimination of secondary forests in different succession stages
using MESMA-based fraction images derived from both medium and
                         moderate spatial resolution images.",
